new study on digital divide

When we have presented our talk on the kids’ use of web 2.0 tools we often get asked if we have seen research on a “digital divide” – are some students not using web 2.0 tools because they do not have computers or consistent access to computers? A new study out of the University of Minnesota produced some interesting findings: of the students observed in the study (of students at 13 urban high schools in the Midwest U.S.), 94% used the Internet, 82% go online at home and 77% had a profile on a social networking site. That’s the U.S. but interesting nonetheless, no?
